How To Brew French Press Coffee
We probably have 20 different ways to make a cup of coffee here in our warehouse: espresso machines, coffee brewers that brew from the top, vacuum pots that brew the bottom. And while every method offers something nuanced and different, if we had to pick one method for brewing, it would have to be the press pot.
There is something beautiful in its simplicity. Executed properly, a cup of press-pot coffee should impress any coffee lover.
Some important factors to consider
Don't skimp on your grinder. We try not to be pretentious, but nothing will make your coffee taste better than a quality burr grinder. Uniform grind size is just as important for a press pot as it is for espresso. The difference is, you want uniform LARGE particles. Cheap grinders and blade grinders are what cause all of the sludge in press pot coffee that most people dislike. Here is a good resource for quality grinders>>
The Steps
- GRIND COFFEE
It is important that the coffee be ground coarse using a quality burr grinder. The larger particle size allows for a much slower and more even extraction. The slower extraction time translates to a fuller bodied and more nuanced cup of coffee.
- ADD GROUNDS TO POT
We suggest about one tablespoon of coffee for every 4oz of water. With that in mind, a 16oz press pot would require 4 tablespoons of coffee and a 32oz press pot would require 8 tablespoons. Feel free to experiment with these ratios to find your perfect cup.
- ADD WATER
Bring the water just to boiling and then let it cool for about 45 seconds. Once cooled, pour the water aggressively into the pot, moving the stream as you pour in an effort to saturate all the grounds. Do not fill the pot entirely as the mixture of coffee and water will expand and create foam or a 'bloom' as a result of the coffee off-gassing.
- COUNT
Start your timer. After 1 minute, give the grounds a good
stir to ensure even extraction. Let coffee continue to brew
for an additional 3 minutes for a total brewing time of 4
minutes.
- PRESS
After 4 minutes, place the top of the pot on and press slowly into the pot to drive all the grounds to the bottom. You may have to press and release several times to get all the way to the bottom. Love the press pot, don't force it.
- POUR
Once pressed all the way to the bottom, pour yourself a cup of amazing coffee. If you brewed more coffee than will be poured into cups immediately, then pour the remainder into an insulated thermos. Leaving coffee in the press pot will over extract and ruin all of your hard work.
