In our industry, there is much talk about fairly traded coffee, and for good reason. It’s great to see so many coffee companies pursuing sustainable and ethical agendas, even choosing to compete about who’s the fairest of them all. Sustainable and ethical practices aren’t shrewd marketing at Nossa Familia, they’re a family tradition.

At our coffee farm in Brazil, our family has embraced sustainable practices for 120 years. This tradition is a point of great pride for us, and it’s one we carry forward each day. And it’s why we say our coffee isn’t just fairly traded, it’s family traded.

Because it’s important to our customers, we offer coffee certified by Utz Kapeh. Much larger than this distinction, however, is our family’s tradition, and our ties to the farm and the families who help us grow and harvest the coffee. This enables us to do much more than simply pay a fair price for coffee, we’re able to directly affect individuals, families and communities, not only through our business practices, but also through our regular donations to local and international charities.

Having recently returned from a month-long sojourn in Brazil, Augusto has his own take on what family traded coffee means: “It means that I pick up the phone and call my family in Brazil to catch up on the goings on at the farm. And when I get lucky, as I was in February and March, I pack my bags, my wife’s bags and the kids bags, and we head down to the coffee farm to play with cousins and listen to the wisdom of my grandparents. We walk around the coffee crop, drink lots of good coffee, and field a thousand and one questions about how the business is going in Portland. We see the pride in their faces when we tell the stories of happy friends and customers who absolutely love the coffee, and love the history of our family’s farm.”

At Nossa Familia, all of us work together to carry forward this unique tradition, not only improving each step of the coffee production process, but by positively impacting families and communities both locally and abroad.
